Let the games begin!
16 Hertfordshire athletes represented the East Region at the National Disability Athletics Championships in Blackpool at the weekend. The team came back with 39 medals including 20 gold and 13 silver medals. Every athlete achieved personal best performances over the weekend which is a credit to the hard work they and their coaches have put in.
National records were broken by Kristian Fox in the 200m and Mitchell Dutton in the discus which was the icing on the cake for the team.
13 of the athletes train with Stevenage and North Herts Athletics Club, the biggest base of disability athletes in the county. This club environment has made a huge difference to these young people and thanks must go to club coaches and volunteers.
The weekend was a fantastic opportunity to compete with the top young athletes in the country, as well as an opportunity to make new friends. Paralympians from Beijing, including Ian Jones who got a bronze medal in the race with Oscar Pistorius, were also competing at the championships.
Ros Cramp from the North Herts School Sport Partnership said 'The athletes were a credit to Hertfordshire and the East Region, with many performances well above what we could possibly have hoped for! Thanks to everyone who has supported our up and coming stars over the past year, if they keep working hard 2012 and 2016 are a real possibility for some of them!'
The East Region squad who are traditionally 5th in the championships, achieved their best result ever with a major boost from the Herts athletes taking us to 2nd place, only behind the huge North West Squad.
Congratulations to all the staff, pupils and volunteers in each and every school who have helped achieve this award!
