Table Tennis Competitions

Roundwood Park SSP held their first round on 17th November at Marlborough School, from this, Roundwood U13 boys, Townsend U16 girls and both St Georges girls age groups qualified for the County Final. Nicholas Breakspear SSP held theirs the next day at St Albans Girls School. Emerging triumphant were Verulam U13 boys, Nicholas Breakspear's U16 boys, Loreto U13 girls and St Albans Girls' U16 girls, who also go through to the County finals.

The girls' County Final was held at Marlborough School on the afternoon of 23rd November.  All teams were now competing for the title of County Champions, as well as for a place in February's Zone Finals.

In the under 13 competition the schools topping their groups and progressing to the semi finals were John Warner, Presdales, St George's and Monk's Walk.  Following some close games,  Presdales and Monk's Walk emerged as finalists with Presdales going on to lift the trophy.

The under 16 competition was structured so that three teams made it through to the final stage and played a round robin to determine the winning school.  The three finalists were Barclay, St Albans Girl's School and Ashlyns.  The competition was extremely close with St Alban's Girls School just edging out Ashylns to take the title.

The boys' competition was held at Hitchin Boys' School on Thursday 26th November.  Schools were split in to 4 pools. The winning school in each pool then played against each other to determine the final positions of the top four schools.  In the U13's age group St Edmund's College emerged triumphant whilst in the U16s it was a win for Watford Boys' School.

All of the table tennis competitions mentioned above were organised and run by Amanda Robinson, Competition Manager for St Albans and Harpenden.  Local table tennis clubs Sandridgebury, Watford Jets and Urban Progress were on hand to provide advice, information and guidance to players throughout the first and second round of the competition.  St Albans and Harpenden did extremely well and should be congratulated on their achievement, well done.

St Albans Girls' School, Presdales, Watford Boys' and St Edmund's College will next be in action at the Zone Final taking place at Morpeth School, Tower Hamlets, on January 24th.  Good luck to all four schools.

County Boccia competition

On 10th December 2009 Hertfordshire Sports Village hosted the first County Schools Boccia Competition.  Eight teams from across the County came together to try and earn their team a place in the regionals. The schools were split into two pools and played hard to beat the others in their pool.  Beaumont School represented St Albans and did extremely well qualifying for the semi -finals.  Unfortunately they did not emerge triumphant, however they played some wonderful games.

Young Sports Leaders from the North

Herts SSP umpired all the games with

Ros Cramp, PDM, and Amanda Robinson,

Competition Manager, being the two head

referees - one for each pool.

The regional Boccia Competition

will take place on 19th January 2010.

Badminton Competition

On 1st December, Marlborough, Francis Bacon and St Albans Girls' School took part in the first round of the Centre Parcs National Schools Badminton Championships held at Francis Bacon. Boys and Girls competed separately in the U14 and U16 groups. As the number of entries were low and schools were from across both School Sports Partnerships, all three schools will go through to the County Final which will be held on February 12th at Hertfordshire Sports Village.

A coach from Abbey Badminton club was on hand to assist at the competition and provided school teams with advice and guidance to help them in the following rounds.

Thank you to those schools that took part in the Partnership round and good luck in the County Final.
